Course Descriptions

COUN 542i: Addictions Counseling (3 units)

This course is designed to provide an introduction to addiction counseling theories, research, and clinical application. Students will be invited to learn about the impact of addictive substances and behaviors on the brain, co-occurring disorders, models of addiction, levels of treatment, assessments used to identify substance abuse, and evidence-based practices in the field of addictions counseling (such as Motivational Interviewing). Students will familiarize themselves with the impact of addictions on the family, group work with substance abusing clients, interventions, and addiction among special populations. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to engage in experiential learning activities such as attending 12-step program meetings, completing an abstinence project, and real-plays to create knowledge pertaining to addiction counseling. This course serves to prepare students to address the issue of addiction with clients in general practice settings as well as work in substance abuse counseling settings.

Notes about program costs:

  1. TUITION for this program is at the reduced SOLES Global tuition rate of $880/unit.

  2. TRAVEL EXPENSES are estimated at $1,770. The program fee includes on-site logistical items such as lodging, conference ticket,  classroom rentals, speakers, some group activities, meals, and transportation to class activities. If you apply and are accepted to this program then withdraw, any costs incurred on your behalf will be charged to your student account.

  3. GLOBAL STUDY FEE is $400. A non-refundable charge of $150 will be placed on your student account for all withdrawals after May 1st. Any withdrawal on or after May 15th, the entire $400 will be placed on your student account.

  4. ACCOMMODATION costs are built into the program.  Housing is provided from Nov 18 (check in date) to Nov 26 (check out date). Additional housing charges may be assessed if students drop the class after hotel accommodations are made on their behalf. Accepted students will be provided with further information regarding the group hotel and will be asked their housing preferences.

  5. AIRFARE is not charged to your student account. Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare. Please check current airfare using your departure and return cities for a more accurate estimate.

  6. WITHDRAWAL/REFUND POLICY.  If at any point after enrolling in the program you decide that you wish to cancel your participation, you must submit written notification to the Global Center <>. A simple email will suffice. The information on the withdrawal policy can be found here.


The application window for the program is from Friday, April 1, 2022 at 12:00pm to Friday, April 22, 2022 at 11:59PM. To be considered for acceptance, your online application must be complete by this date.  Applicants will be notified of acceptance by May 1, 2022.
