This program will take place in Bogota, Colombia during Spring Break 2017. The one-week intensive trip to Bogota will allow students to gain an on-the-ground understanding of Colombia's conflict and peace process.
The majority of course sessions will be held on-site in Colombia. However, please note that there are required pre and post course sessions and they are as follows:

PJS 593: Post-Conflict Peacebuilding: An Unfolding Case Study in Colombia (3.0 units)

Post-conflict peacebuilding gained attention as a field of study and practice only with the end of the Cold War. In the two decades since then, there has been rapid proliferation of knowledge, policy and experience. Nonetheless, these have not necessarily translated into successful
peacebuilding outcomes on the ground. Indeed, many countries emerging from conflict face a higher risk of relapsing into conflict or experience new forms of violence. Their continuing instability, in turn, fuels regional and international insecurity. As a result, peacebuilding in conflict-affected countries has emerged as a critical priority with interlocking local, national and international dimensions. This course aims to illuminate the challenges of and strategies for peacebuilding by examining the case of Colombia where a peace accord reached between the government and FARC after more than forty years of war was narrowly defeated in a referendum in October 2016.
The class will involve a one-week trip to Bogota to gain on-the- ground understanding of Colombia’s conflict and peace process. The Colombian case is a sobering example of the difficulties countries face in transitioning from war to peace. The novelty of the course lies in combining theory and practice; students will spend the first part of the course learning about peacebuilding theory and policy based on international experiences to date. They will then visit Bogota to learn about the Colombian experience with peacebuilding through interactions with the Post-Conflict Peacebuilding MA Program at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota. Upon returning to USD, they will re-assess the Colombian case in comparative perspective.
Thus, the course consists of three parts. Part I involves three sessions prior to travel to Colombia—focusing on the origins and evolution of post-conflict peacebuilding in theory, policy and practice. Part II, based in Bogota, is a close examination of the Colombian conflict and the actors, agendas and political dynamics underlying its current peace process. Part III consists of three sessions following the visit to Bogota to extract key insights and lessons from the Colombian case study in light of the broader body of knowledge in the field.
• To introduce students to post-conflict peacebuilding as a field of study, policy and practice since the end of the Cold War
• To provide students with an opportunity to learn about peacebuilding in a specific context through advance classroom study combined with a field trip to Colombia
• To enable students to discover the critical links between theory, policy and practice
COURSE & CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
While in Colombia, students will have the opportunity to interact with local community members, graduate students in the MA Program in Post-Conflict Reconstruction at the Universidad de los Andes, as well as experts in the field of peacebuilding. The classroom experience will be enhanced by on-site visits to organizations which MAY include: The Post-Conflict Unit at the President's Office, United Nations Human Rights Office in Bogota, International Center for Transitional Justice, Catholic Relief Services and other peace, development and humanitarians Colombian NGO's. Cultural visits MAY include: a visit to the Presidential Palace, the Gold Museum, the Botero Museum, Monserrat, Bogota Graffti Tour. All activities will be confirmed prior to departure and shared with students.

Program participants will be housed in a central hotel in Bogota within a 10 minute walk to the classroom location. The rooms will be double occupancy with two students per room. If you would like to request a single room, there will be a supplemental fee charged.
Daily breakfast at the hotel is included. In addition there will be one welcome group meal and one closing group meal. Students will be on their own for all other meals not included in the program calendar.
Students will depart the US on March 4, 2017 and will depart from Bogota to return on March 11, 2017. Flights from San Diego to Bogota in March are approximately $800.
