Name: Christian Lepure

Major: English/ Visual Arts Minor

Study Abroad Program: Florence Italy Fall 2011

International Experience: During my study abroad experience, I traveled to seven different countries in addition to studying in Florence. I went skydiving in Switzerland, spent time in Germany during Oktoberfest, travelled to Sweden, Denmark, Holland, and explored Paris for a weekend.

Why I wanted to be a peer advisor in the study abroad office.

I would like to contribute to the Peer Advisor Program because after studying abroad, I know first-hand what it's like to be in a different country away from loved ones. I feel that I could help a prospective student make the most of their study abroad experience by telling them the things I enjoyed as well as the things I would have done differently. I think I could help a student to avoid/reduce the effects of culture shock, which is something that affected me the first two weeks of my study abroad experience. Studying abroad was one of the best times of my life and I want to promote the study abroad program at USD so that other students can have a similar life-changing experience.

Best advice for students planning to study abroad.

Take advantage of the time you have set aside to study abroad. It's okay to miss home but don't let that hinder you from embarking on new adventures and experiences. Put yourself out there beyond your comfort zone and make the most of your experience. Time flies and before you know it, you'll be back home telling your friends and family about the amazing time you had!
