Through a values-based education, students learn to respect diverse human values, challenge existing global perspectives, and develop a deeper understanding of worldwide interconnectedness. Globally competent students are able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary for successful interactions locally and globally and maintain connections to facilitate personal and professional growth.

Beginning with the entering class in Fall 2009, University of San Diego presents: Second Year Experience Abroad: Developing Global Citizenship through the Core Curriculum. This program is a very unique initiative that has been specially designed for the Class of 2013. During Intersession of your second year, you will have the opportunity to study abroad in one of five truly exceptional locations: Barcelona, Spain; Florence, Italy; Ifrane, Morocco; Oxford, England and Paris, France. This program offers you the chance to earn four units of core curriculum credit in a variety of disciplines including Art History, Economics, Ethics, History, Language (third semester), Literature, Political Science and Religious Studies. You will travel with USD faculty and staff to your chosen destination and, in addition to taking a course, you will also engage in the local community through community service and university ministry projects abroad.

Tentative Schedule for Second Year Experience Abroad Participants:

December 1, 2009: Application and deposit deadline for program
January 2010: Students are confirmed in location and course
Spring 2010: Students participate in two small group activities with fellow program participants on campus
Fall 2010: Enroll in Global Studies Seminar (1 unit)
January 1 - 21, 2011: Go Abroad!
Spring 2011: Program reunions on campus
