ENGL 280: Introduction to Shakespere
The emphasis of the course will be on literature and theater arts. Students will enjoy the dichotomy of this program by taking in the vibrant energy of big city London, mixed with the slow-paced atmosphere in the rural countryside of Stratford. We will spend the first week in Oxford, reading and discussing plays and relating them to the area and historical sites around Oxford. Possible field trips: Stratford-Upon-Avon, it's historical sites, and a possible production at the Royal Shakespeare Company Swan Theatre; Warwick Castle; Broughton Castle; Christchurch College, Oxford University; Bodleian Library; Ashmolean Museum. We will then spend two weeks in London doing further reading and seeing productions as well as visiting historical sites relating to Shakespeare. Possible productions: Richard II, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth, Measure for Measure, The Merchant of Venice. Possible field trips: a walk of Shakespeare's London; the Globe Theatre and Exhibition; the Tower of London; Westminster Abbey; Middle Temple Hall. Productions will be determined by what is up while we are there, and field trips will be geared to relate to plays we are studying. Emphasis in the class is on close reading and viewing, and on making Shakespeare real, understandable, and enjoyable.
